Breeding Ghost Shrimp Setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This ghost shrimp breeding isnt going to well for me. I bought 20 ghost shrimp and know I am down to five. I didnt think I would need a heater but I think that is the problem are my water. My temperature is at 68 degrees so I willl get a heater and see if that helps.

Woah I had no idea you got 20...Thats way too many for an uncycled tank. (I'm assuming you didn't cycle the tank) Do a major water change (<50%) and don't feed your shrimp for at least a couple of days. Google or search on Mfk for tank cycling. Here's a start.

If you have an established tank, take a handful of gravel and put it near/ontop of the sponge. Alternatively, if you have sponge filters in the other tanks just squeeze out some of the juices from that sponge into ur shrimp tank.

(If you did in fact cycle your tank then disregard what I said)

My temperature is usually around 82 with the heater.

No, I didnt cycle the tank, I just added tap water. I put some dechlorinator in there before but the ph was 8.2. Also, I just bought a heater and a brine hatchery. I will work on cycling the water.

I don't think pond water would be make much of a difference compared to your tap water, at least in the cycled tank. Though in your uncycled case, if you don't have an established tank (sponge/gravel etc as previously described) to start the ammonia cycling process then you can use a bit of the gravel/rocks/algae from the pond to start your cycle. If its a dirt pond or something... then don't throw dirt into your tank, it'll cause a mess.

Word of CAUTION though, I don't know what the condition of the fish/chemicals/water used in your neighbours pond is, so for all I know he could be using a copper medication to treat a disease in his pond (will kill ur inverts).

Note: Don't bother starting to hatch brine shrimp at this point. Only hatch brine shrimp when you see floating babies (or a day before when you get used to knowing when they will release.) Otherwise you'll just be wasting ur brine shrimp cuz they only last a day or two.

Good luck :)

Looks like a cool project, and I would agree the pond water is probably a bad idea because you never know what will be in the water.

I know the stuff I put in my pond for the algae isn't good for inverts. I wouldn't use it.

Ok, thanks for the help guys. I just did my 50 percent water change, so hopefully things will get better. I have them in a 5.5 gallon tank, is that to small?
