I'm going to have a filter in the parent's tank, but an airstone for the fry because I read that fry get sucked into the filter

But if I don't have anything in the tank except a substrate, will the moss grow on the bottom like grass?

use a sponge filter!

java moss and wood would be great!

when people say use sponge filter, can't you use those suction cup wall filters that bubble up just as easily?

An easy way to breed guppies to is one of those 45 gallon circular ponds from home depot. I put small gravel down with anacharis and a pond filter from home depot on top and let it bubble up. Works good.

Are you talking about the corner filters? Sponge filters are much more efficient(more filtration medium + bacteria) and cleaning is quick.

Sponge filters are the bomb..

I even run 4 in my tankbuster tank, extra filtration and air stones and large fish can become dangerous to the tank IMO.

If ur gonna run the air pump u mays well get some filtration with bubbles instead of just bubbles from an airstone.

Sponge filters are designed for small tanks. For big tanks, you can try fluidized bed filters...
