breeding guppies

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I used to breed guppies in my 55 gallon tank. When th female looked like she was about to drop, I put her in a breeder trap in my 10 gallon. The 10 gallon had a ton of plants. When she dropped, they would fall out of the trap into the 10 gallon. Then I put the female back in the 55. they drop about every 28 days. I would take the fry to the LFS and trade them in for filters, supplies or food. Worked out great.

i have 10gal planted tank wif guppies in it that are often dropping... though almost all of them are getting eaten SO... i bought a breeder trap... BUT it seemd to stress the female guppies... i recently just had 2 fatalities in a week of using that breeder tank... so sad :( so i stopped putting the pregnant females in there and just tought of getting the frys (if there will be) and put the fries in the breeder trap for a growout.

my personal experience with breeder traps are unsucessful. the fry seem to do better if i let them hide in the rocks. when the lights go off they would come out and i had no problems for about a month. the only reason they died was cause 15 fry coming of age at the same time threw my biological balance of the tank. nitrate and ammonia spikes and they died. best bet and what i seen is working so far is a seperate tank altogether........set the tank up and cycle it but dont put the females in. once they have them then take the fry out and transplant them. its working so far for me
