Breeding/Hybridizing Sunfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've been thinking this since the beginning, but I thought you were just kinda doing this for fun... But you do not need to be here asking for advice - you need to scoot over to the NANFA forum.. There are (at least) two men over there that have been crossing species of sunfish to determine sex ratios, sizes, fertility, size at maturity, max size, etc. for years in Missouri. They have numerous posts, some in very great detail, about their experiences with various sunfish hybrids and using different sexes of different species and the various results of each.

Yup that's how I get information from these two men on NANFA about warmouth hybrids being sterile and also do projects on hybridizing with different species.

Been on their site, its definitely a wealth of information, but I have never checked out the forums.

+1 on the info about the warmouth stuff...thanks for that.

Also - anyone have any other cool colorful species they can recommend and add to my list?

Captive bred is easier - as long as I can get paper work for it then I can get it into my lab. So if you are breeding let me have some of your stock!

Only if you have something super colorful that I havent mentioned already in this thread.

Very pronounced verticle bars on bluegills are one of the easiest traits to observe on the fry.

As far as local sunfish go, I can easily get: L. gibbosus, L. macrochirus, L. cyanellus, and possibly even L. gulosus - but obviously not really interested in that fish at this point.

Found more info concerning hybrid sunfish involving redear, greens, bluegill. Its been found that most, if not all, are fertile. a male green sunfish X female redear has a 50:50 sex ratio. Phenotypically the hybrids are, for sunnie species 1, intermediate between the two , and sunnie species 2 traits, the ratio is 1:2:1. in all the other combos of green sunfish, red ear sunfish, and bluegill, there was 70% males.
A male bluegill X female green sunfish, shows stronger fish than, male Green X female BG.

I have more info to post if anyones interested.

I researched it because I am considering farming it in an Aquaponics system. Lol

Is it possible to cross NA species with SA species? Could one make a Sunfish/Apistogramma mix?
