Breeding/Hybridizing Sunfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well, guess I showed my ass! I have never seen one either, so jumped to the conclusion due to the huge mouth. Turned out to be Greenies after getting them home and viewing. Threw them in a garden pond for now, not sure what to do with them! I think there are 3 males and 4 females, ranging from 3"-4.5". One male had very dark body with intense orange dorsal and caudal....faded out now of course. Found another great ID link, http://www.tnfish.org/FishIdentificationID_TWRA/TWRA_Sunfish_Identification_Key.htm

Frying pan =P

I've kept dollars year round indoors and also outdoors without any problems, they are good hardy fish, have found them everywhere from swift creeks, rivers, swamps, to ditches.

A dollar + warmouth would look awesome.

Not big enough for the pan! Maybe hor dourves!

Does anyone know of a site that shows distribution maps for all the sunfish?

2nd ?...I have these in a 150g rubbermaid buried in the garden. I sink my lotus and other delicate plants in that for the winter since it's deeper than the rest and insulate to keep ice to less than 6". Any chance of them (greenies) suviving the winter? I know they need the ice opened partially for gas exchange.

Read that all sunfish will need a cooling period like most northern species before they will spawn.

Check the Peterson Field guide...they have ranges in there.

+1 for them being greenies, that is too bad.
I highly doubt that they will survive in such a small container.
This is why I have that chambered 210g with chiller!

Looking into buying a batch of L. symmetricus soon...and I just got in 5 L. megalotis the other day...looks like there is at least one female, the fish are almost full size, so this project is finally moving fowards!

Also have a spring (this year) trip planned to collect some L. humilis.

I have thought about this for a while. Are both genders in hybrids sterile or are only females fertile like cichlid hybrids?

Nearly all hybrids are highly fertile in both sexes, however Bluegill x Green sunfish often throw high percentage of hybrid males in a batch. It's Warmouth hybrids are sterile.

Warmouth is no longer being incorporated.

At this point what I am doing for sure this semester is:

1. Breeding my L. megalotis to get as many females as possible. Or at least to have one or two brilliant males.
2. Breeding these with L. humilis, and L. symmetricus.

3. End up with a small, highly colorful sunfish. I will continue to breed that for color.

I haven't heard of symmetricus hybridizing with other sunfish before. Let us know if it works. But I wouldn't think your symmetricus hybrids (should they live) would be very colorful. Keep us posted.
