Ah sweet...thanks. Getting longears in state will be a trick...no hatcheries that I know of, and they are endangered in this part of their range I guess.

Not a problem, you just need find a native vendor, they always have few subspecies of Longears, mainly northerns and centrals.
Well, I've kinda decided to get some Dollars from Zimmerman. Not sure if I want to get them this fall or wait till spring. Does anyone know how they do in year-round 80 deg water? I think they would be interesting x on Pumpkinseed. MB I will find a Pumpkinseed too.
Just a side....F1 generation will all be nearly identical due to that fact that since the parent species are mostly homozygous. The fun comes in when you cross the F1's. The F2 generation is where all the reallignments and reshuffling happens. Theoretically, the F2's can range (phenotypically) from looking like either grandparent species and infinite variation between. Point is, this is a long term project you are addressing!

They cross white bass and striped bass. To make hybrid stripers for fresh water lakes. Originaly they said clamed they were all steril and couldnt breed, Comeing to find out they arent and breed just fine. Just thought i throw that out there
Just make a weekend road trip down to my town. I caught nine longears in two hours with worms on an ultralight for my living room tank. My roomates love them. One of the little three inchers has really great coloring for a juvie and I got one 5 inch male that is way cooler than any exotic IMOA. The real treat was the little flathead catfish though. I'm going to enjoy him for a few months then let him have a happy life being top dog in the farm pond.
Would love to have a flathead. Im unfortunately not allowed to have any wild caught fish. Research institution here...so...gotta keep everything as legal as possible.

Had a buddy get the "western" dollars. He kept them in a tropical planted tank, and raised some to full size. Others got bullied, diseased, and died during tank poisonings and pH swings. So really no way to tell what all got to them, but I think you would be alright.
Im going to keep stripping gametes from the fish I find most desireable till I end up with my own "strain". It will be just like a crazy discus...completely different from wild colorations, or at least that is the plan. This is long, long term. I will be gone and onto grad research by then...but this is kinda part of my research.
Just spent the afternoon hooking 5" Warmouth by the dozen. Have 7 selected and hoping to keep them alive till I get home tomorrow afternoon. More data and pics later.
