Breeding/Hybridizing Sunfish

Try do Warmouth with any species. Maybe a Longear or Pumpkinseed. Has anyone seen a Pumpkinseed x Longear or Longear x Green?

warmouth with longear, or either of those with pumpkinseed, couldn't you try a bass with a sunfish, because bass are technically sunfish, just like peacocks are cichlids

Yes, yes you could. I wonder if someone might be interested in trying that. ;)

Warmouth are also on the list. Going collecting in the south for research this winter and will hopefully pick up some longear's etc.

Maybe even some pygmies but the hybridization chance there is very slim...same with the basses. The natural hybrids at least are all within the same genus.

Wiggles, get up here so that you can be a part of this.

I'm working on that part; I'm hoping to be there for Spring Semester. I have some other sunfish hybrid ideas, too, besides the one that I already mentioned, but I think that one would be the best as far as coloration and size for the fish trade go.

I need to figure out what exactly it is that's living in my pond since I somehow have sunfishes in there without me ever adding any; maybe they'll be cool hybrids of some sort.

My understanding is that all of the lepomis will interbreed. I would be shocked into a comma if you got a pygmy or a blue-spotted to cross with the lepomis group. I must have missed your objective, but if it is aquarium hobby I don't see any value in the bigger centrarchidae. If it is gamefish, then there are some cool prospects!

If it was me, I would work from the Dollar Sunfish for color and size. Warmouth could be a cool start to a miniature bass for the aquarium bus.

Smallest lepomis is the Bantam....L. symmetricus.

Like I said...chance of hybridization with pygmies is incredibly small...same would go with the traditional basses.

Either way, one or the other, or possibly both will be attempted. I have the resources. Will probably start with making a more colorful warmouth though.

I just remember that Warmouth hybrids are sterile but F1 hybrids should be colorful if you used colorful species.

How 'bout this;

Pumpkin Seed X Bantam
Dollar X Bantam

then take the f1's from each and cross together. Goal would be to get the small size from the Bantam and mix up the awesome colors of the other two P1's. F2 should give a fairly large range of color to choose from.
