Breeding Jaguar Cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hey guys,

Just giving you my latest update with my jags. They are definitely going to mate. I did another large water change and turn the temp to 79 and then waited 24 hours or so and bumped it to 83. The ovipositor on the female is showing and the male has become much more aggressive toward me (e.g. hitting the glass, puffing his gills). He does this in the back right corner of the tank where I created a "rock condo" if you will, for the female. There is a peice of slate rock in this area as well where she plans to lay her eggs. They have both dug out spots in the back of the tank for pits and such. I am simply waiting for them to actually mate.

I wanted to thank all of you again for providing me with quality advice and information. I've done some research pertaining to how to properly care for the fry once they are born. For instance, don't feed them until their yolk sac is gone and they are free swimming. At that point, I should feed them baby brine shrimp (would frozen be ok?).

If you have any other information on how to properly care for the fry, please let me know. I have another tank set up (a 10 gal). I'm going to take my brothers 29 gallon and set that up as well. In addition, have any of you ever sold your baby jags to local stores in your area? If so, what was the going rate? I was thinking $3 per fish and then the store could sell them for $9.99... that's 200% profit right??? Just a thought... I've actually talked to one place that said they would buy some but we didn't discuss a price at the time.

Thanks again guys,
ND

youll soon find unfortunately, that unless you have special jags they arent worth the food to keep them to get big.
Soon youll have more than you know what to do with and no one to take them.

Tanks a little cramped too.

You're right, the tank is a little cramped. I tried to provide the female places to hide from the male as well as multiple pieces of slate rock for them to spawn on. In my attempt to do so, things got a little crowded. But its only the two of them in the tank so it hasn't been too bad...

Ok, my jags actually mated. They laid eggs on the piece of slate rock I spoke of in my previous thread. This happened a couple of days ago. The eggs have already hatched and I now have a pile of baby jag tadpoles in my tank. I did not dose my tank with anything that would kill the fungus that grows on the unfertalized eggs. I read that this can kill the fry...

I'm not overly concerned as I don't expect to have that many baby jags survive. For those of you whom have done this before, how many fry typically survive a spawning???

a large percentage if you have nothing else in the tank to eat them.
I have population control in my tank so ive never personally seen my pairs fry get to free swimming.
