breeding mollies?

i have two males and 2 female mollies in my 125 gal turtle tank, the turtles are albino so they barely can hunt these mollies so i figured i would breed mollies in there for my piranha's in my other tanks. i had them for two weeks and no luck can they breed in freshwater or they need brackish or does it really matter. i'm going to petsmart to get like 4 more females so my ratio would be 2 males and 6 females, that should start something. are mollies livebearers:nilly:

I'm pretty sure the gestation time for a molly is 6 weeks. Keep waiting.

it is 6 weeks. go and see if they have any pregnet mollies lol thats what i did and it kick the rest of my females in to gear to breed i have one large male to 8 females he is a very happy fish lol

Yeah, don't forget about temperature and some salt, about 79-81 degrees works. The salt is important, but don't put too much, even though I have kept mollies in full saltwater tanks before... Use breeding cages as well, those help alot, and make sure to get the ones with the covers as female mollies escape alot.

Females seem to do OK in freshwater, but every male I've put in FW lasts a few weeks, then goes belly up. Trust me, they breed like crazy in brackish water. The more females you get, the faster you will be seperating fry. Also, usually the females have smaller dorsal fins.

Every molly I've purchased came home pregnant. Nearly every female at the store will be pregnant. Some will have a darkened spot on their stomach. This is the fry showing through the mother. Also, I've had mollies give birth and then deliver more fry weeks later without a male in the tank. They're made to multiply! The only problem I've had is having males without enough females. If you don't have 3-4 females per male, the male will, eh hem, "harass" the females to death...

i have one 30 gal and one 20 gal. would this work for breeding?

I just strated this myself, and purchased two males and 4 females; two of them were already pregnant. In less than a week I already have about 20 fry. I ground up flakes in a plastic baggie and dip it out with a moist toothpick to feed the fry. So far it appears to be working well. I will probably keep some females and feed the extras and males.

Mollies are very easy to keep and if conditions are right, you won't be able to stop them from reproducing. They do like salt in their water. (not table salt tho) I use kosher salt from the grocery store (for canning and making pickles). It's usually cheaper then the petstore.
