  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
hummmm looking goos bra, i bet they sould be raised as battas are, not sure...though u may be safer raising them in the decorated tank mabye keep some cherrie shrimp in there 2

Hi congrats on your sucessful breeding.

I have some enquires which you might help. I am wondering if these ornates are the only 2 fish in your tank? As I heard that if its a bichir comm, chances of breeding is lower.

The water, you are using to change the tank water, is from your tap? Treated water or "clean" water from a natural water source?

Congrats on the spawn!

Here's a theory...if they are coming up to gulp air, make sure the air temperature doesn't differ from the water temperature too much. I know in Betta breeding, this is where a lot of fry are lost. As they develop their labrinyth (sp?), they can develop infections and die if the air temperature is too cold. This may also affect Polys as they grow.

So far fry are doing OK and eating Daphnia. Kind of cool to watch, since they stalk the inverts, then lunge and swallow. The 10gal tank has a lid, so temp of air stays consistant. Good point about the Betta breeding though. Fins of all fry are now showing signs of nipping each other. I am planning on separating this weekend. I think I have a plan and will update you all. I found a floating livebearer breeding container that, with a little modification should work and take into account their gulping behavior.

Questions about the breeders. The breeder tank only contains the two Ornates. It is a 30gal, breeder. Water is filtered well water. I live in the Virginia lowlands, and the aquifer has a lot of iron. I have a home water softener and use the iron reducing salt. For water changes, I also run it through a single filter cartrige (to remove most other metal and impurities). The same water is used for all my tanks (to include a reef tank). No problems with water quality..so far.

Thanks for the info. It gives me a better idea. I know water is the main trigger factor, but its hard when we cant get "natural" water source. I have been try to breed my bichirs too. The nearest i got to was seeing female pregnant and no male to fertiliser it.:(

You may want to try a larger fry tank as it would allow them to grow faster and provide more space. You were right about them being cannibals more room might slow that down. We had a simalar problem with baby oscars. At what size did they begin breeding and have you had them since they were small.
We have a large male and 3 5 inchers growing want to try and breed them also. Have you noticed if the fry go through growth spirts our large male seems to. Do you have other fish breeding that you could feed these guys some wigglers? Just a thought.

Thanks All. An update on the tank. Unfortunately, I do not have the option of getting a bigger fry tank. I am at the marital limit on tanks anyway. However, I have come up with something that may work. I modified two livebearer three way breeders into seperate compartments, These breeder tanks foat in the main tank and have vents for water circulation. I suction cupped them together and on the side of the aquarium so they wouldn't float around. In the process of capturing the fry for this tank, I discovered I actually now have 5! So four get compartmented and one stays in the main tank. Pictures will follow.

Question about the adults. I have tried to breed Ornates for years. I did not have any success until they were at least 10in. Size matters. I aquired my male in 2005. He was about 15cm (6in) then. I did not see a huge growth spurt (but I really wasn't looking at the time). By 2010 the male had grown to 42cm (16.5in). I got the female as an adult in 2009. She was 38cm (15in) then. Both really havn't grown much since.
