Breeding Ornates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wild Bill, over the spawns that I have wittnessed, havn't seen them get any bigger. I am thinking the size of the tank could also affect spawning. But I honestly don't know. I have never seen a decent clutch of eggs either. Only ones and twos scattered around in an area the female selected. Normally, my first indication that the ornates have spawned is when I see fry scurrying around the tank. Only time will tell.... I do plan on eventually getting a larger breeding tank.

Status: Four fry still left. Largest is 3.8cm. Smallest 2.8cm. The two smallest remain separated in my small breeder setup. The two larger are free swimming in the ten gal. The two free swimming seem to avoid each other, hiding in the plastic plants. They could be larger because of access to food. I feed the separated ones once a day. The daphnia I feed do not stay in the separated containers and swim out into the larger space of the ten gallon. I believe the free swimmers eat more and more regularly. I wil try feeding the separated ones more often.

very nice. i would try feeding more times a day. or better yet maybe have some live food avialable 24/7 so they can eat whenever they want. baby guppy, swordtails, tetras would all do the trick for live foods. maybe hatch some brine shrimp. they sell brine shrimp eggs at petco for a couple bucks. the more u feed the faster the little suckers will grow lol.

My pair of senegal's spawned about 2 years ago, wasn't successful with the fry.:( Now that I have read your thread, I will be even more diligent on keeping the fry alive.congrats:headbang2
