Breeding Ornates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Status: One more fry died. I am down to three. The one that died was separated in the small breeder set up and 3cm long. I still have one separated, and two free swimming. The largest is 4cm. Smallest is now 3cm. I believe one died because it did not adjust to new food. For some reason, all my daphnia died out. I was able to switch to black worms. I have to cut them into about 5mm pieces, but I have witnessed the little 3cm separated guy eat. I also feed a few grains of New Life SPECTRUM small fish formula. I place a pinch in a small cup, (The kind you use for Jell-O Shooters) and add a drop of Garlic Xtreme (a Kent Marine product). Let that soak then add some more water and transfer to tank using a siphon (turkey baster). Have not seen any eat the dried stuff, but it is available. I only feed dried food when I don’t see leftovers. Water conditions: PH = 7.5 NO3= 20ppm NO2=0 NH4=0 KH=120 GH=30 Temp average approx 76F (~25C).

Status: 3 Fry left. Growing nicely. Largest is 5cm. Smallest (still separated) 3.5cm. Eating blackworms and Brine shrimp. Learned an important lesson. Until I can get theses guys on some type of pellet food, I need to have a backup food source. Daphnia died out, so I swiched to worms. But they don't keep well. So varying up food types tends to keep them eating.

You gotta give us tips, mate!

Dude...all my tips are on this thread. Tried my best to post everything that I did. No secrets..and got some good advice from all the MFK Poly folks as well. It is a combined effort and you all helped. Thanks! Now to keep them alive until they mature. I will keep updating this thread until they are at least around 10cm.
