Breeding Ornates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Status: Three fry still growing. Smallest = 4cm, largest = 6cm. Trying to change up food
Eating ,live black worms & brine shrimp. They seem to also eat frozen/thawed bloodworms & brine shrimp. I have tried pellets ,(Hikari sinking carnivore pellets. I chopped them in 1/2 or 1/4s. Fry smell them then move on. However, if pellets are left in tank overnite, they tend to disappear.

A pick of the 6cm:

Another update: Did water change from breeder tank. Pulled 16 fry from tank. Did not have another fry tank so I put them in a gallon betta bowl. Seems to work. Luckily. I still have a tank with Daphnia. Fry are eating. Smallest of this batch = 1cm , largest = 1.5cm. Here us a picture of three new fry:

This is an amazing journal they should sticky this

Fantastic journal, Mark!
Thank you for all the usefull info you provide and best of luck with this new batch of fry.

Status: 3 fry still alive and growing. Changee over to feed frozen Brine Shrimp and Blood worms. Easier to feed and they seem to be healthy. I went to feed on Tuesday and discovered the one fry in the separation tank was gone. When I looked, it had jumped from the holding tank to the main 10 gal tank. Now all three are free swimming. They do not appear to be bothering each other too badly. THe smaller ones will clear away from the big guy. Smallest Fry = 5.2cm. Largest Fry= 8cm.

Thats awesome.

Looks like those 3 will make it.

Thanks. Don't want to call success until they are at least 10cm or they lose their gill extensions.

Anyone know what size they need to be when that happens?

And what do you call these guys now? I think they are larger than fry , but not yet adults.
