Yeah it's a male. When it was younger, I would have bet money it was female lol.

I thought the same with my male, they will fool Ya up to 5" or so.But my female was very obvious at bout 3.5"

darn the timing... not long ago I drove through Tn on my way to Mi... lol

PS - they, especially the female, are beautiful... I was tempted to stock my 4x2x2 with a pair but kept hearing horror stories about them being to aggressive to keep together without a divider... I'd love to hear a little bit about the aggression of yours.

Mine were togather for nearly a yr in my 135gal ca community tank.i tried putting them in a 75gal of there own and the male was too rough on the female. So yeah a divider is necessary when the male is ready to breed and the female isn't.I'd give it a try,you may get a pair that will be ok in there for a few yrs anyways.Just have a divider handy.I must say my female is one of the nicest looking freshwater fish i have kept in my 18 yrs of fishkeeping

Mine have just really started getting real agressive in the last few mths. The female at 5.5-6" and the male at bout 8.5".Up until then my 8.5" JD could handle them and wouldn't let them breed. But now it's a whole differen't story. They get more agressive with age and size

man i've been looking for a female for a long time. i have two right now; i'm pretty certain they're both male but they're around 3.5 or 4 inches so i might get lucky.

Yes sometimes the females will have some speckles, especially when small.

You can always post pics and ask for id help, but give it another " or 2

there the best pictures i could get

It looks male but they can fool you sometimes. My previous female was so obviously a female even around 3"TL but my current one was iffy. I'd give yours some more time to grow to be definite.

Look at this 3" young lady with her dark black dorsal and no body spangles... just a few dots on the dorsal fin.

This is my current Festae around the same size, the offspring of the one pictured above. I really thought it was female for a while. Now that I'm a little more experienced, I can see the dorsal fin is more pointed and the body shape a bit different but not much.

Sorry fishluvr to derail. I just want to say again that your Festae mating is awesome. If I could do it over again, I wouldn't have sold so many of mine. I really want a female now lol. I kept 3 and all were male.
