Breeding Shrimp for LFS

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
lighting really doesnt matter at all other than to keep plants alive in thier tank they deffinatly do better with plants. You could do a mess of java moss and java fern with simple grow lights from walmart for less than $10 add a sponge filter and thats it. heres a really good guy for shrimp stuff and plant stuff on ebay, sightly slow on shipping (malaysia) but it all shows up great and cheap. http://cgi.ebay.com/Mineral-Rock-Cherry-Crystal-Red-Shrimp-Color-Enhancer_W0QQitemZ250305180951QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item250305180951&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

I have a small betta tank available..... too small? plus what type of filter would i use on a betta tank? if needed, i do have a spare 10 gal. i just dont know where i would put the 10 gal in my apt...... this maybe? http://www.bigalsonline.com/BigAlsUS/ctl3684/cp19170/si1382103/cl0/leesspongefiltertriangle

pretty good deal, and I like those bamboo caves. I need me some of those. How small is small? 10g really is your best bet, they eat like pigs and dont put up with nitrates. Plus I wouldnt have many more than 20 adults in a 10G even then you'll be doing at least a weekly water change.

:confused:i'm pretty ocd so water changes are no big deal. for a small tank like that, i would do changes twice a week! heres a question for ya.... if i used water from my comm tank, as long as there are no nitrates, could i put it in the 10 gal and skip or "cheat" the whole nitrogen cycle for new tanks?

nope sorry no way to really "cheat" the cycle. Personally i just ignore the whole cycle, stock lightly for the first month and never skip a weekly change. I never have any problems and I'm constantly setting up and tanking down tanks. Currently 9 tanks up soon to be around 20.

PS- if you set up the sponge filter in your comm tank for a few weeks prior to setting up the small one. then use water and the sponge from the comm tank in it, you will have an almost non existant nitrate spike.

hey you have some crystal shrimp ...... how much would you want for say 5?

I just got them started if I get some extra, and figure out how to ship fish cheap, I'll let you know. Cause right now 5 would cost you like $40 just in shipping, your better off for the time being buying from someone who ships a lot and thus does so cheap.

thats what kills me.... i need a cool lfs. even if they don't have what you need, i think if you develop a good relationship with them, they will order what you need without killing your wallet on shipping. I can barely find ghost shrimp around here..... well i better get the tank setup soon so it can be ready once i do find some shrimp ;)
