Breeding Steady Feeders

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Con's breed fast, but they don't make the best feeders because of their cichlid bone structure, aka very bony = dangerous for your fish to eat.
but as compared to other feeders, they may be your only really steady supply unless you want to breed guppies which isn't a bad idea at all as an alternative.

100 gallons full of guppies? lol i don't even have a 100 gallon tank yet and you are already doing guppies in one.

Why not try a small kiddy pool full of guppies with a hydro V, they should work at room temperature and breed for you very well. Then put your cons in the 100 for some extra feeders.

yeah kiddie pool or build a small pond of 100gal or more then run big sponges or a largish canister and stuff the thing with easy to grow plants and guppys if left the algae should be fine for the fry and flakes for the parents with a bit of blood worm or what ever you want to give a little extra protein and you can have a nice wee pond indoors that both functional and attractive :Dstick a couple of floresent tubes over it and it should be good .

But thanks for being so polite

Do the mollys be close to as fast? If so this could be a great option.

I understand about the aggression on the cons, I was just hoping I could keep it simple, but in the end dividers are not very difficult either.

The reason I need them is because im moving into a house next fall and Im in the process of designing a 500+ gallon stocktank "pond" with a window so its more like a "tank" ha ha. Watching fish hunt is what its all about. It wont be the only source of food though as I know its not the best. (however it should be much better than with normal feeders)

Im currently growing out a silver arowana and searching out a source for some nice P bass.

so why not just do guppies? Are they too small?

And as for the goldfish, i was wondering about them too. I'm from northern cali, so during the winter it gets a little too cold to raise guppies outside since they'd need a heater, so i can't raise feeders during the winter.

Well I would raise them indoors but yea im thinking guppies are just to small and slow to be interesting. Plus the cons wont eat the fry as much as the guppies and I dont want to mess with trying to pull the female at the right time.

Are there any other important things I should know?
