Breeding triggers

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well since the temp boost in the last day my male has actually started paying more attention to the female. He is following her closer. He is climbing on her more. Over all sticking closer then at the cooler temps. Just tonight I saw him nipping her side. Didn't latch on yet but a few light bites.

I'll be updating as they go to see if he gets it done. I'll also try for a vid of his behavior to see if the more experienced breeders here can see if this is actually "courting" behavior of merely coincidence.

Here is a vid of them. He kinda did his "semi courting" around 40sec and again at 1:20 ish. But he saw me at the tank and wanted more food. He still was paying extra attention to her during the vid but noticeably diff then when I am not right next to the tank.

It is just the pair in a 180gal. I have the glass for my 360 but just need to put it together.

Good luck with the build. Hurry up, they look a little cramped in that tank. Hope things work out for you.

It is just they way they were durning the film. They actually have a lot of room. The logs are all open set and have the smallest footprint possible and they can go all around them. They were in a half begging mode. They are close to the upgrade though. The female is 22" long and 14" disc.

I have been looking at a temp pond set up until I move so I don't have to build the tank for a short while then tare it apart for my move coming hopefully with in a year. I know guys that breed leos in 4x2 footprint so the tank isn't an inhibiting factor for their breeding.

I'll see how it goes with time and their growth. If she does get knocked up I am not moving her. She looked prgo when I got her back in April. She was stressed from the move and I think she reabsorbed the litter she had. So no risks this time around if he gets it done. He didn't manage last attempt and thought he did.

Some people just have different views on what is room to swim around than others.

I would be afraid someone would get injured in that tank if they try breeding. Also they might not even try because of all the stuff in that tank

Who breeds Leos in a 4x2????

And I thought my 180 looked cramped with lil 10" rays in it...... lol

IF I was trying to accomplish what you are I'd be getting that other tank up or ditch all the stuff taking up room in there. Doubt the female's going to let anything happen in there.

This is in no way their final home. Like I said I know they are close to the max in this tank.

I have been thinking about that and I actually had more wood but piled up in the corner. I have been reducing the amount of wood in the tank.

I don't recall his name but I see him post up on facebook. He is in Europe. Also a few in Indonesia. I wouldn't go so far as to say I am friends with them just know them from there.

I wouldnt say this is over cramped just yet. If there was a third in there then yeah I would be going after myself for cramped conditions. One of the indo guys I know has had better results from breeding in closer proximity for males and females. He was saying the females can't run away from the males so the success rate is higher.

Like I said above I have been taking things out of the tank. I have left more in because the female will try and eat the other fish in the tank. I left what I have in to give them a place to escape. I actually have a deal for all the fish but the aro and rays to be sold in a week or so. Once they are out I'll pull out basically everything. That was my plan.

I also honestly thought I would be in my house right now. I have to build the credit/funds up a bit from what I was told. So there was a delay. The house will have a 12*6*3.
