British pike

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ive looked into it but not only do they get huge like 4ft+ they only eat live food I think... also considered perch, that's a much better compromise I think and some can be very pretty, kinda like peacock bass imo.
exactly what I was thinking, after all the fishing I've done the biggest perch I've seen was about the size of a adult Oscar, so that could work. Do you think I could keep a pair?

at 18 inch a perch wouldn't really be suitable for a 5x2x2 but at least you can release them once too big.

if your perch are anything like the ones over here, you should keep them in a school, probably 4+ fish.

no no I'm just asking are we talking about the same species of fish here? That's all I'm asking, I think the entire esox family make great tank fish provided you can house the larger species comfortably.

a 5x2 is a bit too small for a pike IMO. Perch would do well in there I'd think.
yes I think it is, I would only house it in there until I got something bigger, or perhaps get something bigger as my main tank and use the 8x3x3 to house them

Thanks everyone, Justin your from UK yeah? Would I be able to keep these fish without coolers?

If you want to do a local species tank then go for it man! Not enough people here (and in general) keep coolwater fish and even less keep European species. Redfin Perch are probably more along the lines of what would work well for you. I keep a school of seven Yellow Perch (basically the slightly smaller, American version of Redfins) and they're great fish. Always begging and they're only 2.25" long now! You might also wish to look in to some other local species such as Chubs, Bream, Dace, etc. But I'd say with that size tank, avoid Pike, Carp, and Wels. Trout and Atlantic Salmon would be interesting (the latter probably a bit large) but you'd probably need to chill and heavily aerate the tank. Or at least keep it in a very cold room.

Just to chime in , pike would be awesome Ive thought about it loads of times as theres a pond full 100m away from my house theres a canal full too :D
I've kept perch in a 4x2 when I was a kid but they were tiny at the time and ended up in my uncles pond , they were fine without a chiller kept at room temp , had to feed them earthworms , mealworms , crickets (I already had for my waterdragon) plus any other insect I could find at the time lol. The colours are amazing once they get past 3" very much like bass

Seems like everything's pointing too perch then, thanks for the opinions, advice and expert knowledge. I love this site. Thinking along the lines of heavily planted very natural looking aquascape, would I need power heads? (Just writing a shopping list)
