from what i've read, if i remember right
the chilled fish goes all sleepy-bye, blood and fluid in it's body are frigid, then the liquids freeze into little icicles and pierce the cell walls of the fish all over, then there's a moment of extreme agony, then death.
i think.
if you're confident you can snap the fish's spine [decapitate] cleanly and in one go, i'd do that. animal anesthetics work great too. i know MS-222 [tricaine methanesulfonate] works well on saltwater sharks. clove oil is a common choice.

alcohologist answered for me,there are better ways to dispatch beloved pets

still eating, no change. I'm leaning towards getting clove oil. where might one purchase this...clove oil?
I may still try to nurse it, I am an RN, but I may eventually need it.

freeze the fish, it'll just be like going to sleep

freezing is a worse idea for gar, than most fish, seeing as gar can survive in colder water.

How many days has it been since it happened? Are you already giving up? I imagine it would take awhile for bones to knit and swelling to come down.
I'm on about 2 weeks now. I just want to be prepared.
