my fat lipped red devil is from the wild and beats my convict up alot, and sometimes briefly pushes around my other fish. im gonna give my convict to my friend who can care for it better but anyway my question:

why isn't my wild caught red devil eating live prey?? it moves slow and spaceship-like most of the time unless its "blasting off" to charge my convict out of the water. and the most it ever does is move slowly towards the feeder and when the feeder runs away it totally forgets it's there.

does my red devil fish have ADD? cause since i started using sand substrate, he doesnt eat his cichlid pellets properly without sucking in a bunch of sand and spitting all of it out. he can only get them as they sink. my baby tiger oscar is only 2'' and quickly locks onto feeders like an infra-red target and chases them till eaten, yet hes so much more friendly.

i cant imagine how the heck this 5'' red devil survived this long in the wild with THIS kinda hunting ethic...

What is your ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and ph readings? Is the devil by himself or does he have other tankmates? How long have you had it? How long have your tank been running before you put the RD in there? What kind of filtration are you using? Have your RD ate since you first got it? These are some questions that you need to answer before me or other members here can help you with your fish.

your wild caught red devil is likely not used to the tank life.
4 walls is a new thing son.

idno but i do 25% water changes weekly. he is living with a baby tiger oscar (2inch), 4 plecos (1inch, 2 inch (X3), an O'opu (native hawaiian gobi; 4inch), and a 3inch convict that i'm giving to someone.

so 6 fish and 3 elusive feeder comets that havent been eaten yet. i had the RD for about 3 weeks. the tanks been up for about 10 years in the foyer at work before i took it home and re-did it. it came with a whisper 30 and i added a whisper 60 to it since i have carnivores. the RD eats my cichlid pelletes but not feeders, id like it to eat live foods though every so often atleast. my problem is more a disappointment to me than an actual problem with the fish itself.

its used to the tank though. hes utilizing all the rocks and swims freely in the fake plants and digs at the sand, attacks the convict etc.

it could be possibly that it's more interested in territory than food to.

my big barred only eats once or twice a day.
and i feed both of them like 3 times a day and my juvi barred just goes nuts food.
i go near the tank and it begs so i throw in a few pellets lol.

red devils are probably one of the most dominant fish for their size.

i'm sure it will come around eventually, don't give up on that fish son.

i wont. i just hope it gets an appetite for fish soon... i woulda thought that itd be used to it since it was living in the wild and quickly accept fish though... oooh man i hear the convict darting and skimming the water right now from upstairs... it must be getting beaten up by the devil... i hate that theres nothing i can do until tomorow!

Red Devils aren't really carnivorous fish that go and get there prey they do more like a hit on run and when its weak or dead then it will eat it they are like scavengers. But I thinks its best to feed it pellet food then live fish but that's just opinion.

why don't you just take the fish off of feeders?
or are you using fry as feeders?

pet store feeders will get cha fish sick son!
