why don't you just take the fish off of feeders?
or are you using fry as feeders?

pet store feeders will get cha fish sick son!

stop callin me son... anyway i never pay for feeders i got thousands of small fish to feed my fish and they have all been quarantined period.

as for the scavenger thing, my red devil isnt that either. i put a thawed frozen feeder in there for my oscar and it passed by RD several times without notice or care. so i wonder how it survived in the middle of the wild.

as for the overstock, there are no fights now that the convict is gone. my RD and oscar swim together and dont bother my plecos. if you dont count the plecos and comets, i only have 2 fish in that tank. a TWO INCH oscar and a fOUR INCH RD... there is no overstock problem right now and by the time it will be, i will have moved out and will be able to connect my pair of 55 gallons for them.

how come people always say RDs eat small fish? well its not doing anything so i might as well give it away or fry it up now...

I had a big RD that would sift the sand to get the pellets. I wouldnt worry about it as long as he is eating the pellets. I would take him off the feeders, but thats just my 2 cents worth. That could just be your fish's personality too.

You should include the plecos and comets in terms of stocking as both are messy fish and produce an extra bio-load on the tank.

Well naturally the red devil (Amphilophus labiatus) isn't a true piscavore like P.dovii etc.
It's natural diet would consist of small crustaceans, insects, snails, worms and other bottom dwelling organisms. it is named "labiatus" after it's calloused lips developed by its feeding behaviour of sand sifting for snails and such. Although it would still eat small fish , at the size yours is/was when caught it may have never eaten a single fish. My devil never ate other fish killed plenty but never ate them.

well considering my dual 30 power filters the tank water is pristine. i havent seen much mess come out of the plecos though and their still tiny.

JUST IN: my gf bought me a VERY juvenile JD at petland (not even an inch!)... ive always wanted one but their never available to me here!! SO, im gonna have to give my RD away now, though i was planning to anyway since hes more destructive than a fascination to my community... cant say im gonna miss him too much lol i just got a JD with a pretty good hint of a possible hump :D. oscar thinks hes food though...

very good advice..

Sometimes a RD doesn't show it's true personality until about 8 inches. Once it grows a bit more it will definately clear that tank. BTW try krill as a substitute to feeders. It's safer and has natural color enhancers, essential fatty acids, and a higher protein to fat ratio.
I'm having to give away mine because of his hate for my 13'' pleco and that's in a 75!
Someone with a good home come get him please!

Not really sand sifting, but sucking things out of small crevices and scraping tiny organisms off rocks.
