you can find them all over lake wilson, but i caught mine in the canal near sunpress and king windward nissan. there seem to be a handful of them there, but it doesn't look like a really big population. definitely easy to catch though, just cast your breadball wherever the orange glow of the fish is.

This means your fish is not really wildcaught but feral from an introduced population. This would make your fish as rd/midas as any walmart, petsmart, petco, Florida pond-raised rd/midas out there.
If you've seen any of Modest_Man's threads on fishing for feral rd/midas he's cought some amazing looking fish. It appears that being raised in such a different environment from a generally stable aquarium with varying temperatures, sunlight and various amounts of live foods and algae really does wonders for them.

technically its wild caught. yes the RD is an introduced species, but i did not catch an "abandoned pet" thats for sure. there aren't any midas in this pond. look at my picture, its a full-blown red devil. true though, it's descendants are from the aquarium. we've had RDs swimming in our lakes and canals for a long time.

I did not say you got an abandoned pet but it doesn't really make a difference. Just because you got it from a feral population in the US, has been exposed to a more natural setting and has grown bigger lips cause it can use them does not mean your fish is pure. It's still product of rd/midas with largely RD characteristics. You're not gonna pull pure A. labiatus or A. citrinellus out of a pond or lake unless you go down to Central America.

perhaps, so how about this...you'll never know for sure that you're pulling out a pure A. labiatus or A. citrinellus without DNA testing...unless you're in Central America ;)
