iv got these little insects that live in my 10 gallon planted tank. i spotted one for the third time last night. they dont seem to be bothering my fish... but i had planned on moving those fish into a 20 long and using this well established tank for cherry shrimp breeding. now im not sure whether or not its safe for cherry shrimp fry, much less the adults. i cant get a good picture of them because theyre to small for my camera to focus on but i can try and describe them pretty well, maybe yall can post pics of aquarium insects that fit the description and i can ID it. ( i will include some pics but i cant promise good quality)

in short, they look like little dragon flys, but underwater of course. and no, they arent dragon fly larvae, i have seen pictures of those and their larvae look nothing like the adults. these bugs are similar in appearance to an adult dragon fly. they have always appeared at about 1 cm long. body thickness is minuscule, maybe the width of the ball point on a ball point pen. the end of their tails is split in three sections, kind of like a trident. the first one i saw seemed to have tiny wings, but they looked to small to be of any use as far as actually flying goes. and they have ranged in color, the first one was brown, the second green, the one last night was clear/white. thats all i can tell you.

here's some pics. they are all the same picture with the contrast adjusted for better viewing.

get rid of those, if u dont no what they r, a u can use pest liquids that kill snails, probably work on these things 2, or u can get some clown loaches 2 eat them, just get anything that kills invertabrates

thats the thing though, i cant use chemicals because i want to breed invertebrates (cherry shrimp), and the treatment would stay in the tank long after iv used it. i would need a fish that can really root around in all the massive amounts of algae and plants - making sure it doesnt miss a single bug, otherwise, im just gona have to throw out all this stuff and start over. and even that wolnt assure me of not bringing home new bugs on new plants.

so my options are, get rid of all the plants and start over; or determine that the bugs arent harmful; or find something else to breed.

and i just had a horrible thought, my filter is extremely mature. the light shines right through its clear casing and promotes algae growth and sustains even duckweed that gets sucked into there. bugs could be all up in there, even eggs which would be near impossible to see. so even a transfer of my mature media could promote an infestation were it to be used on the 20 long upgrade. ............. and i worked so hard to get that tank set up right.

ifs its chemicals u r afraid of carbon soaks it up, if u still dont want to use chemicals than...

theres biological, goldfish, clown loaches(any loaches), gouramis,...

or u can take out all the plants, get a boilin bucket of water, dip the plant in the boilin water for 2 seconds, boilin water instantly kills all livin things attach 2 the plant, good thing it cant kill the plant in that short amt of time. take out all fish n put them in a bucket of water(not the boilin 1), take out 50% water, get boiling water to refill the tank, make sure tank is fill n filter is running, let the water cool down to your usual temperature n chances r all of the damsels would be dead, then put all fish plants back

good luck beating those bugs!

Do not ever put boiling water in your tank...The seams will blow...:screwy: when you buy new plants rinse them very well to avoid anything they may be carrying...I QT all fish and plants upon arrival..Not sure how to safely remove them invert safe though...Lupin will know.
