build or buy...that is the ?

I think the cost will be the same or maybe more if you build one. Of course you gota count the fun involved. I would build one just to see if I could. Also sort of plan a larger one while your building the 180. If the 180 works out you have a great starting point for something bigger!

I believe the cost per gallon starts to go down on a DIY build at about the 500 gallon price. Cost per gallon seems to be about the same (DIY vs. store bought) for tanks smaller than 500 gallons. IMO

I love building, and love building tanks/ponds even more. But for a 180 of standard dimensions, i would just surf craigslist and certain forums until i saw someone selling one for less than 300, which i see all the time.

Now if you were doing something different like a 180 tall or custom design, then it would be so worth it to build. But it just seems strange for you to build a tank that is so commonly available.

But i totally respect anyone that decides to pursue their goals and dreams, so build away and enjoy every minute of it, before and after.
It so much more enjoyable to look at the tank afterwards and say not only is it mine but i created it!

One nice thing about building your own is that you can customize shape to fit your space. You can have a wider footprint to give you more floorspace. You can build your background into the tank, you can incorporate water jets and air lines into built in 'rock' formations.

Custom is always better!
