Building a 9'x25' pond

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Great looking project. I see many similarities with my own project. The only difference is that my dog had puppies about 6 months ago. Good luck.

Tropical resort is about the only way to describe your project...Both ours have water, but yours is a whole new level of obsession

I mentioned a few days ago a frog that has been living in the sump hole by the filters since last summer. Whenever I clean the filters he just watched, never really hid. Wasn't sure what would come of him when I filled the hole in, and yesterday I noticed him in the little pond on my deck. He is still hanging out there today.

I also decided I would let the three legged princess out for awhile too to see her new home. I put her in the upper pond a few weeks ago, and when I came back later in the day to feed the koi in the big pond she swam her three legged self up and grabbed some food. She somehow climbed out and plopped down to the big pond. Hopefully this one will contain her.

Agreed on the root ball, looks great.

I love you 'I'm doing this today attitude' and you get it done. Great job.:)

Except I am assuming yours would end up in your indoor glass pond :-)

I actually found it washed up while driving along the beach well before I started the first pond. It was sun bleached and stripped from the surf so I threw it in the bed of the truck. Didn't really fit the theme of my other pond so it has been a "conversation" (not necessarily positive) piece in the yard for the last year.

Thanks, Not all projects work out that way, but I really try. My hands and body are regretting it today. The goal was to have it done by this weekend because the other turtles have to come home, and I was told there was absolutely no chance I was bringing one of the tanks with them. Next week starts summer break so after a short respite from all physical and mental activities I will have plenty of time to hunt plants and logs for it.

That's what I miss about Washington state...all the free bogwood anybody could ever want...:(:(:(

Slid out of work at lunch again today. Monday will be a long one packing up for the summer, but it was nice to have the afternoon off again. I was able to get a lot of work done although the pics look about the same. I brought home crush and squirt from school today. They both swam right up to me and then were a bit befuddled as I put them in a cardboard box. They are now in a much larger home, hopefully they will be nice to the 3 legged princess. I was considering putting in a divider, but think there will be enough room to avoid aggression.

Today I was able to assemble the filter and get it up and running and add a T to the air I currently have out there through a stone to the turtle pond. I will need to run some larger tubing to allow better airflow next week, but it will work for now. I found it interesting that there is less resistance at 6' deep using 1/2" tubing that at 18" using 1/4" tubing. About 95% of the air takes the path to the deeper diffuser.

I am trying a slightly different air manifold on this filter. I built it so it would be balanced with the water input diffuser supporting the air manifold and water spread plate. It should allow the water and air to both diffuse evenly when required. I also had to plumb the clean out valve much lower so I could run it under the existing deck to the current waste line.

6th drain line plumbed this week, more fun under the deck with a sawzall and grinder.

A look at the filter plumbing before gravel and sand. The yellow hose is running to the 4 way water diffuser, the 3" open pipe is the waste drain, the capped 3" is to the pond, and the open 1.25 is to the air manifold.

Cleaning all the dust from the sand and gravel. Beats the old 5 gallon bucket method. Turn it on and come back 30 min later.

Tomorrow I am going to build the cover around the filter. I was getting too tired to finish it today.
