Building a 9'x25' pond

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just one line, can only clean 1 at a time. Each filter has a plug or valve on the drain at the filter. Up to now they have just been watering the lawn and keeping hoppers the frog happy under the deck. Guess he will have to move now.

So your filters discharge straight into the garden?

Just stumbled onto this thread haven't been past page 1 but the project and your tank look's great.

If you remember back to the little ditch debacle I had last year thats where they go. The ends of the old ditch are open at either fence and the the 4" line running underground from fence to fence. Glad I put that pipe in so as to not deprive anyone of water :) I am not flooding anyone though (fortunate or unfortunate?) the water gets absorbed about as quick as it hits the ground.

Yes I remember that now. Thanks

I thought you would be one of the few who would. Only thing better than digging a ditch once is digging and filling it twice:)

I was able to get the ground leveled yesterday and and lay the first few courses of timbers today. The local hardware store had 7 inch spikes which are a good workout hammering in. They are long enough to go through 2 rows and into the third. They are about every 20". I was planning on drilling and running rebar as well, but don't think it will be necessary. I am really surprised how solid it is turning out.
Final size ended up 2'x20'x18" deep, and will have two additional rows of timbers to keep the turtles in. Filtration is going to be basic. 55gal S&G filter and several air stones or a diffuser hose. My goal is actually for the water to be murky with a layer of duckweed and plants covering the surface. The turtles didn't seem comfortable in the clear pond, so I want them to be able to hide and have it as natural as possible. The goal is a watergarden/swamp look. It is just going to be a seasonal pond for the summers. The turtles will still go in to my lab each winter (the kids adopted them), so it will get drained and flushed each fall.
Tomorrows plan is to stop and get plywood and more timbers tomorrow. I think I am going to line the bottom and sides with plywood to help keep the bottom from sinking and the sides smooth.

I havn't picked up a new camera yet, so just some grainy pics.

I stopped working a little early tonight. A family came and adopted our final pup so the house will be a little quieter now. She was an all white female which is fairly rare for a JRT, and had me a little worried about finding a home.

Nice progress I see, what's around the tree trunk?

what's around the tree trunk?
Just some mulch. I am trying to get the yard ready to plant grass. It was an overgrown mud mess when we bought the house and slowly we are trying to bring it around. The mulch was an impulse project, not sure if I like it or not.

Three days left of school for the year. Our principal let us leave early right after the kids today so I was able to get in almost a full day of work. I have mixed feelings about it now. With the extra timbers to keep the turtles in it is looking a little too high to me, but hopefully some landscaping will take care of it. In hindsight I wish I would have left it dug down about 6" so the whole thing was a bit lower. Other than that everything went well. I finally got the liner process down so I am proud to say there are no wrinkles and the corner seams tucked nicely and came out well. Tomorrow I will get the filtration up and running and start boxing the filter in. I flushed the other filters to fill the pond figuring it would be a good use of the water and way to jumpstart the new filter.
