Building a 9'x25' pond

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Zen is turning into Liz with all the random attachments;)

Nice work:)

Thanks guys, the random attachments are always welcome too.:)

The tiles are surprisingly solid and seem like they will hold on, time will tell. I began staining it the same cedar as the deck but on the fresher wood it came out more yellow. I may mix in a little of the darker stain from the fence for another coat. Once I finish the filter cover it will be time for plant hunting ( and the sweat, bug bites, muddy shoes, and mysterious rashes that come along with it)

Wow!!!!!
At first in the muddy pictures I thought it was going to be some ugly hole.

I am impressed, and even the waterfall looks awesome!
(Cute dogs!)

They seem to be settling in nicely.

Quick 4th of July update. We went camping again last week so not too much new. The cat tails in my little pond have spread over the whole thing so I pulled a few and put them in for the turtles. I cut the sides out of a milk crate to give the turtles a cave under the plant pots and used some rocks to give them a little island.

And two from the other pond. I hadn't turned the air off since I put the sand filter on and did for the first time last night and noticed I have some sand to sweep down the drain. With the air on the ripples hide the imperfections :-) I thought the ripples would bother me but I actually like the look of them. I am thinking of adding some underwater LEDs on the bottom drain to light up the column of bubbles at night. The fish follow you up and down the bridge, but I have been feeding them mostly at the calm end so its still easy to see them. I must say I am really proud how clear the water ended up. Last year with the lights on at night you could still see some small particles. The sand filter seems to have taken care of them. Its pretty neat to see each scale on the fish when they are 6' deep (had to brag a little) Unfortunately I am still using my video camera for pics so they cant do it justice.

You've got a nice head of fish in there now. You should be proud, the first time I saw the hole I was like ?, from then until now it's an amazing achievement

I had been planning a pergola and shade for the pond since I built it and finally got to that part of the project.

The pergola went together fairly easily. It took a lot of measuring an planning to figure out how I could tie it in to the existing decks, ponds, the hot tub though. It was a lot of little detail cutting and notching for every rafter and perlin. I am pretty proud how well all the joints came out though. Kate was dead set on the giant posts, I was skeptical but think they came out great. She also helped me get the concrete footers set under the existing deck, every time I go under there I hope its the last.

Shade cloth over the pond. It still gets the morning sun but not much afternoon/evening now. I am experimenting without a UV, I turned it off about 2 weeks ago and so far so good. I am thinking now that the filters are established I can save the electricity and bulb life until the water cools back down in the fall.

sadly I had to drain the tub to do it and my body could have really used it.

Great work, I agree the larger post look fine. One of these days you'll add something to the setup that doesn't require you going under the deck ;-)
