Im building my algae scrubber system for my 55 gallon reef. im gonna make it out of a 10 gallon and do kind of a mini sump with it too. so i thought i would do a thread on it too and hopefully get suggestions along with it. i unhooked my skimmer about a week ago and already see levels starting to stabalize and corals grow faster... its amazing how much a skimmer can hamper a reef tank. so i have the tank, the pump, and some tubing... i ordered the lights and some silicone. ill upload some pics tomorrow

first update: im trying to calibrate my pump to how much water is coming outta the tank... How in hell do other people do this??? can anybody with a sump help me?

You're going to have to get some kind of an overflow. That way, you don't have to match your flow rate to a siphon. An overflow will only remove as much water as the pump returns. If your overflow can't keep up with the pump, either your overflow is too small or the pump is too big.
Search for DIY overflow, it should explain everything you need to know.

i think i finally matched them up lol... i didnt want to spend extra on an overflow so i thought it shouldnt be too hard lol... i found an extra eheim flow restriction falve and got them pretty well matched up... i marked it on the 10 gal with a sharpie and left it for 15 mins and it didnt move. im gonna glue the valve in place so it doesnt move.

I hate to tell you this but that is never going to work. you really need to use an overflow
as soon as the siphon gets a little dirty the flow rate will change and the tank will over flow. also if the power goes out or the pump fails your tank will empty

It takes literally 5 minutes and about 10 bucks to make one... After the first one the next few only cost about 5 bucks because you have a 10foot long piece of PVC.
