anyone use bulkhead drain as an overflow to their tank or have you heard of this.

i though i might try it as a cheap alternative to a built in overflow box.

i might do two 2'' diam thread bulkhead with the black drain screen. installed toward the top of my tank. so they overflow into acouple pvc pipes and into a wet-dry, but it would go through some coarser media to strain out the large junk before it goes through the finer mechanical pad in the wet-dry.

Almost my entire central system consists of aquariums with holes drilled thru the upper rear of each tank. I use 90 degree pvc elbows threaded into the bulk heads to adjust the water heigth and to surface skim.

My 300 has PVC too. when i get home I'll try to snap some pix....it incredibly simple.

every drilled tank has bulk heads..

are you saying if they drilled the back of the tank instead of the bottom

no

like on the side or back of the tank toward the top.

mine will be on the side, not enough space in back :( but just enough to get a return line though

rallysman, i look foward to the pics ;)

Here's the method I use for bulkhead installation and pre-filter setup. Note the open top of the T connector. If the sponge pre-filter is forgotten, during cleaning, and water flow becomes restricted, water will drain down the T. This will prevent overflows. The T also breaks any siphon from starting so this setup is safe to use with wet/dry filters.
