Bulkhead gph

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I making my tank out of plywood so could I make overflows out of plywood and screw them on? What size would you suggest? Just realized... Wouldn't two 3in bulkheads take too much flow and overflow the sump? Could I just offset them?

You cant overflow the sump with too large of bulkheads. They can only drain what is being put into the display from the return pump. You could put a dozen 3" bulkheads in a row along the top of your tank. It wouldn't make a difference.

If anything you want large bulkheads. Always oversize your plumbing. I try to run my stuff around half capacity unless something goes wrong.

You'll probably be ok with a pair of 3" bulkheads.

Ditch the overflow box idea, especially if you're gonna try to make it out of plywood too. Keep it simple. Just use a bulkhead at the top of the tank with a strainer.

it depends, i think a large overflow box works better for tanks with slow current on the surface, if you have enough current on the surface to push the surface scum to the pipe, the dirt will eventually be sucked into the filter.
