Bumble Bee Grouper (Epinephelus lanceolatus)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Oh no! The Fish Police are out already. Didn't even take 24 hours....

I "rescued" the animal from a 100 gallon aquarium. The original owner did not know much about him. He is now living in a 700 gallon tank with a new owner.
That person has already transferred several of his previous animals to public aquariums in the past including the Houston aquarium on his own dime.
I've done my part. The rest will be up to him.

I simply though folks might enjoy seeing some photos of his juvenile colors shot with a real camera instead of your typical iPhone snap shot.
If not, let me know and I will refrain from causing anyone additional angst. Too many folks out there ready to rush to a judgement when they know nothing about the situation.

lol- I think in police/CB code what we have here is a 10-38.

Relax. Take a deep breath and reread my post; I simply asked two logical questions in order to avoid rushing to judgment. That's awesome that you bought the fish a little more time until hopefully a suitable home can be found.

But most public aquariums will not take these fish because of:
1. Their ultimate size
2. Their aggression; they have been known to take out fish (sometimes even sharks) larger than them; sharks are actually a natural food source for these guys.
3. Their numbers in the hobby; lots of irresponsible people are buying them up with the "plan" to donate them to public aquariums without realizing public aquariums can't take them all. When they can't take them, the alternatives are not good.

This species isn't "expected" to outgrow a 700G; it will outgrow a 700G. Anyone trying to keep it for life in such a small tank should "expect" to have a dead fish on their hands. Sharing pictures & knowledge shouldn't cause anyone additional angst. Perhaps the guy who originally bought the fish saw a pic on some forum and thought it was a beautiful fish, so he bought one (obviously without knowing anything about it). Maybe if there was more information provided, the situation could have been avoided. Maybe, maybe not. Sorry you took my questions so personally. My intention was not to flame you, but rather share information about the species that may prevent others from making the same mistakes as the original owner of this beautiful lanceolatus.

Awesome fish. I have one that ate a 3 inch mag float. He also ate a net that I had to fight with him to get it out of his mouth. Never spit up the magnet and now he's about 3 feet. How much do you feed him?

Sent from my iPad using MonsterAquariaNetwork app

....might need a bigger net.
