how do you prepare the smelt? Do you chop it up? Will it foul up your water? I tried smelt awhile back and it made my water smelled really bad. Even my hands were super stinky.
Also isn't giving them beef heart like giving steroid? I used to give my aro beef heart and it would grow like crazy. Haha
Smelt- I used to feed whole smelt (up to 6") but stopped and now only feed chopped pieces 1" long. I did this to get them conditioned that food is small, not grow out sized bichirs. I believe it prevents the 20" plus guys from seeing a newly added 7" Bichir as food
I just chop the smelt into 1" long pieces, if there is roe in the smelts I remove the belly sections as the eggs tend to scatter and litter the bottom of the tank. I don't find odour an issue
As for beef heart, it has always been a staple. I have found it accelerates growth---- but use more sparingly now--- my 23" ornate that passed last year literally grew up on beef heart almost exclusively. Makes me wonder if that had something to do with his unexplained death at only 6 1/2 years of age
Amazing looking Polys-the weeksii looks incredible. They must push the boundaries on the width of the tank! You filter with canisters right? What's your water change schedule?

tank is custom made 26 inch wide which is adequate. Water change is 40 percent weekly, 2 X FX5 and one Ehiem 2217
Bichir availability in Canada varies, I believe west coast is not bad but here in Alberta it is poor.

Haha just noticed that myself-we're veterans! We're looking at BC but I'd happily go Alberta but my Wife liked the Okanagan where we vacationed as the climate is a little warmer we're told.
Canada is a beautiful country, you won't go wrong either way!
That he is, IMO weeksii are one of the most massive bichirs at a given length! Big head, large girth and no flowing tail fin to stretch the length
