Exactly. This way, you can have a better idea of what to stock and what is in demand. If you do stock oscars, just tell people they NEEDa ninety gallon tank at LEAST.

OMG, this reminds me of something I saw at That Pet Place.. the ever so awesome pet store... haha..

I was reading a list of species they don't guarantee.. then there is a list underneath that with something about housing Oscars... It says "30 gallon for a single oscar, and a 55 gallon minimum for 2 oscars"...

Wow...

I was at a petsmart once and there were two tanks of oscars. One tank said they get to a maximum size of 12 inches and require a 55 gallon tank. The other tank said they get to 10 inches and require a 80 gallon tank. I told the manager she was an idiot and never went back.

But back to the topic and hand, there are tons of petsmart bashing threads out there. My only other suggestions would be to have really nice show tanks. It works. Especially on teenagers like me. I go to big als JUST to see the shark I always tell myself that I cannot buy anything, but I always do. I actually counted my receipts and all the times I went "just to look" I spent $1245 in total. In a year. When I had a job lol.

I can believe that. I just went to the pet place Saturday, and spend $75.00. It was only 2 items.. the first item was on sale for $2.50- The second was a 9" Ornate Bichir. :naughty:

im doing the same thing right now. not gonna rush it, been thinking of it for years. been working on the plan for a while, there is lots of help out there for people trying to start a small business. i have an appt with the va since im a vet to get some help. first i gotta sell my plan to them then after that they will help me make a better one to sell to a get a loan. so first go online find some templets an make a plan. show why u think it will work an how. im telling u tho, its lots of work an research but if u wanna do it go for it, i am. also if u wanna get some cool stuff u will need to apply for a import/export license. this can take some time. so do what i did and do research on that an get the application to get the ball rolling. best of luck.

Just think. If you are in a location like a mall that has lots of traffic, you will have teenagers. Teenagers waste money. We do. I admit it lol. Might as well waste money at your store. Big attractions are what pays the bills IMO. Something to draw people in and fascinate them. Like that god damn awesome black tip shark at big als. I WANT IT!

I've been steering more on the mall idea actually...

I spend $300 on 2 Koi out of a mall in VA over the summer actually. haha.

I live in PA. ;) And I drove to pick them up.

I think a mall would be great if you can get a large enough location. A lot of stores in malls can be kind of small.

there's a large place that we looked at-- It was an old skate store.

I would start small 1500sqft. Location isn't as important as other types of businesses. You don't want to be in the bad side of town. But like the Movie Field of Dreams you build it they will come!. Most real fish people who hear of a new store in 50 mile radius will find you. These people travel long distances to fish stores if they have to. Then you got your people who just likes to have fish tank and only shop at Petsmarts cause its close by or not real serious fish collectors. Your going to need to carry all the bread and butter fish the same fish every fish store has as they do sell. Rare fish don't sell very fast. Your targeting a very narrow market. As time goes on and your store is establishing itself you may start to specialize and build a reputation for certain fish. But start small keep your overhead down. I wouldn't go into a mall. Your going to pay premium floor space. You'll get lots of lookers jamming your store with them. Your real customers will not like it as you'll be tied up answering question while your paying customers wait. Plus your store hours will be limited to mall hours.
