Busted Aquarium.....What a mess

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If was the slate, a good way to prevent it happening again is to use eggcrate, cover it with your substrate (you can't even see it) and then stack your slate. That way you have a slight buffer to protect from the impact. Just my .02 though. Worked well with my S/W and the live rock.

darrrth ....... your stand looks fine, if your stand is level you should have nothing to worry about stand wise. I also think that the chances of a piece of slate falling a few inches & taking out the bottom of a 90 gallon is slim to none.

It's impossible to say what the exact cause of failure was, but keep in mind that while tempered glass bottoms are stronger overall than regular annealed glass, a sharp pressure point can cause it to fail, as can a manufacturer flaw in the glass. The latter is not common in tempered glass, but it happens, and is known as spontaneous failure.

Thanks for the detailed information RD. So out of curiosity i went back and use a leveler to check all 4 sides of the tank and everything is at dead center except the right side. I swear when i first put the tank in place, it was all level....

Attached is a pic of the leveler.

Now i'm paranoid. I'm testing all my other tanks with leveler. My other 90 gallon is not dead center on the left. Time to go get some composite shims tomorrow.

Hopefully anyone on MFK reading this thread - will learn from my mistake to check levelness of aquarium from time to time. And all my tanks are sitting on concrete basement floor.

A tank can be out from side to side, or front to back, but if it's out from corner to corner X is when you will typically have a failure from torsion. Most of my tanks are out slightly at one end, that is lower on one end than the other, or slightly lower at the back, than the front, and have been for many years. What you don't want is corner to corner differences.

I mentioned that on page 1. :)

Even Tenecor now requires their tanks to be on their stands in order to qualify for their warranty.

Hey rd, thanks again for the detailed info. So the picture of the leveler being that unlevel isnt a concern?

That was taken from the left side of the tank front to back.

By the way, i have also contacted marineland about this and will post it here when i hear back from them.

On and the oscars are doing ok so far in the 55.

Just have to do more water changes and go order a 120 soon.

Woohoo!! Upgrade!!

Sorry clockwork. lol

darrth - no, that's not good if it's only at one end, because now you have a slightly twisted tank, which is causing corner to corner torsion.
