Busted Aquarium.....What a mess

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yep, the tank on the far left in that pic does appear to have stryro under it, so what?

I'm an old fart just like you vfc, and I have never placed styro under a tank with raised molded plastic trim, and I have never had a tank fail on me. Also, although those tanks appear to be standard 55 gallon tanks (they look like Perfecto tanks) and only 12.5 inches wide, the glass is approx half as thin as many larger tanks with wider footprints. Some day take a close look at some of the commercial stands made by All-Glass (now Aqueon) -some of their stands only support the tank in the 4 corners, not the entire perimeter.
I've seen All-Glass tanks up to 150 gallons sitting on All-Glass stands where the tank had no support along the front or back, only in the 4 corners. Both the Modern & Classic Mission style stands are designed this way, and both have stands in this design up to 210 gallons.

I have been involved in many very long styro debates on this board (with vfc for exampe and Pharoah).

the debate never ends LOL

my 150g All glass (now called Aqueon) sits on a steel tube stand that is basically end support only with no stryo underneath it as it, as mentioned, is NOT recommended for tanks with floating bottoms. (see my sig)

sorry for your loss and mess.

I have always been weary of Perfecto tanks though. they use thinner glass than Aqueon/Oceanic for the same tank volume for the larger sizes, and the seals are noticably thinner.

I compared the two brands directly when I was purchasing my 150g (and went with Aqueon).

for the smaller tanks glass thickness is the same but for the larger sizes, Aqueon is a bit thicker. not much, but still thicker none the less.

I would probably consider going with a different manufacturer (like Aqueon or Oceanic) for extra peice of mind.

IMO Perfecto tank quality began to decline around the same time they began supplying Walmart & later PetSmart. Not only tanks with thinner silicone seams, but many that I saw were outright sloppy, uneven, full of air bubbles, etc. It was also around that time when United Pet Group Inc bought them out. IMO All-Glass now known as Aqueon (since being bought by Central Pet & Garden) does make a better tank, but I'm sure that some times it just boils down to the individual tank, and how it was put together. The last thing anyone wants is to buy a tank that was built or inspected when someone was having a bad hair day.

Sounds like they are cutting corners (pun intended). I don't even know what brand my tank is but measured the glass and it's 10mm thick all over, 48x18x18. Seems sturdy and I think it's pretty old. Old = better, that's what the ladies keep telling me at least.

Yeah back in our time the tanks came with their own stand. I could place a stainless steel tank on broken up rocks and the tank would not fail. But the tanks and I have changed over time and now I use 1" close-cell foam strips under all my tanks.

I had one of those 6ft 60G tanks from the early 70's. Being only 12" wide, it was able to hold up to some abuse. I had it set up for a few years on a metal stand on a concrete floor (like 12 Volt Man's set up). However, when I moved to a place with hardwood floors, a few months later the center glass brace broken free from the back of the tank. The tank's side panels were bowing outward so I drained the tank.

....somehow I could not imagine a 150-220G 6" tank supported only by four 4x4 legs. Do you have a spare tank to prove the point?

I actually have a 6' 125 gallon tank that has been sitting on an All Glass Classic Mission Oak stand for several years, supported only on 4 corners, no problem. Most of the major aquarium manufacturers such as Marineland (aka Perfecto) and All-Glass (now Aqueon) have never recommended placing styro under their tanks.

Now if that tank had a flat bottom, sans a raised plastic lip, such as many of the Euro made tanks, then it's a different story.

for the silicone seams yes.

but Perfecto/marineland still insists on using much thinner and flimsy plastic cross bracing for their tanks as compared to Aqueon/Ocean.

eg. I was talking about comparing the 150g size of both brands, Aqueon's has two cross braces, while Perfecto's had only one and it is flimsy. so you have Marineland buidling a 150g tank with weaker bracing and thinner glass. A bad combo. it was an easy choice. Aqueon all the way.

thank you everyone for the response and feedback. I just got done shimming my existing perfecto 90 gallon tank and so far so good.

My new 120 will be acqueon/all-glass for sure. I just check the price at LFS and it's a bit higher but for the peace of mind - i think it's worth it.

thanks.
