busted my new 180 gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Could have been from heat.
I had similar thing happen to me once - was in process of cleaning and moving tank, had it sitting outside, long story short - i got sidetracked and by the time i got back to the tank 2 panels had cracked - simply by sitting in the sunlight.

Yup! that would be my guess. cool water and hot glass doesn't mix.

sorry for Your misfortune, but Glad to see that You are moving forward with a plan B.

did you tie it down? you still get an awful lot of vibration when driving if something is not tied down. Else you had 100mm foam under it or something should be tied down very tight!

anyways easy fix, Just order some glass the length of the cracks and over size it width wise. silicone it down onto the cracks let it dry then smudge some silicone under the tank over the cracks. Should work else your cracks are so wide your missing glass then your screwed =P

i should have said there was no water... just glass.. would heat have affected just glass that much?

cracks are 75% along the bottom, starting from the front, then elbowing all the way to the far side, i dont think bottom pane could be repaired

I would dump that tank and go with an acrylic maybe a 125. The smaller the tankthe easier to move it and less of a chance of crackage, Good thing that didn't break in the house. Now if your mind is set on monsters then I owuld just go with a new 180. I had many size tanks over 40 years and never had one leak. My largest was a 300 gallon.

Sell it for 250 as a big snake tank. Take the loss buy a BRAND new tank. That tank could have just been 10 years old and REALLY weak. You never know.

Instead of spending 600 on a new 180 take ur time n look at craigslist... I got a 220 for 200 bucks cause some guy was movin n didnt want to f wit it. Its all bout finding the roght person with the right ish.... May take longer but cheeper in the long run by a lot

im up here in canada, craigslist in nonexsitent pretty much, and used big tanks are hard to come by. kijiji is the only real clasifieds for tanks up here and mostly dreamers wanting like 400 plus for 55 gallon setups.

Just need a sheet of glass the size of the base then if you really want to fix it. wont be easy....

I still dont see how heat would cause so many cracks if its laying flat.. you didn't tie it down hard enough or placed it on something that causes it.

Pretty sure the only way heat would break glass or crack it wont occur on your nature strip lol.... you would have to heat the glass up pretty hot then cool it down extremely fast and tap it with something to get a crack. else there was already a very skinny crack in the glass theres very little chance your common sun rays can cause this... do you ever see windows breaking due to sun light? sure not all windows are plate glass like most tanks but theres little difference...
