Well, my homemade sump system is going bye bye real soon. It drives my wife crazy because of the constant falling water sound, and both my living room tanks share it, so they have to be next to each other.

I ordered two Ehiem 2213 canister filters, one for each tank and they should be here by next week. I've heard really good reviews about Ehiem filters, and too many bad things about Fluval. So I went with Ehiem. Anyone own one? How do you like it?

the best canister filter in my 30 yrs of experience I have six 2217 running for 20 yrs w/o a problem, tons of media space and quiet, How many things have that reliable history. best of luck,

You see eheim canisters that have been running non-stop for years with no problems. I love how quiet they are, but not too fond of the eco series though.

I tried all the variations of gurgle/whoosh/splash stoppers.
Tried the PVC, skimmer, and skimmerless overflows.
After living through all the dirty looks and the cunning, subtle ways of her letting me know how much the noise bothered her..I too, finally quit the sump life forever.
I went with canisters as well.
Gotta tell you, they didn`t make it a year before I got tired of laying on the floor to unhook the hoses for service.
Guess the ease of the sump cleaning spoiled me.
I ended up back with HOB..Jeeeze, right back where I started.
Ran Penguins for quite awhile, but the poor quality of the impeller materials and my mob`s habit of spitting sand in the intakes, turned them into grinding noise makers.
I now run a pair of HOT 250 Magnums and so far, so good.
You will like the classic series of Eheim canister.
Well made and do a great job.
Maybe you won`t mind the extra work involved in service.
Good luck.

Sump will def. spoil you... welcome back to maint.

My 90 is a corner-flo (eshopps WD125CS and mag-drive 7). It is a little louder than the x2 FX5 on the 220 or Fluval 405 w/Emperor 400 on the 120. The noise isn't too bad. My issue is the mechanical filtration. It provides tons of biological, but I have been too impressed with the mechanical. I now have an Emperor 400 on the 90 to help.

I Just dumped the sump on my 220 and could not be happier. I am running 3 FX5s with no problems and very quiet.

x3 FX5.....Nice!

I have x2 on mine with a big sponge filter hidden behind some decor and undergravel filters with x3 Penguin 1140 powerheads.

....And above, I meant I have NOT been too impressed with the mechanical filtration.

I'm thinking of going with 1 FX5 for better mechanical filtration and 1 Eheim for Bio!? I would add a HOB in addition to the single canister

You guys went from a sump to a canister? That's like switching from Bluray to VHS. And because of the noise? That makes me laugh. If you did any research, you'd see that with a little planning and work, you could make a sump/overflow setup that's completely silent. Ever heard of a Herbie, or Beananimal overflow setup? You can run thousands of gallons of water per hour without so much as hearing a trickle. Don't believe me? Watch my videos:

Herbie (sound is amplified on this one a lot, you can even hear my breathing)
