Bye bye sump, hello canisters.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I also heard running the pump submerged will help with noise from the motor. Great info I'm still on the fence!

You guys went from a sump to a canister? That's like switching from Bluray to VHS. And because of the noise? That makes me laugh. If you did any research, you'd see that with a little planning and work, you could make a sump/overflow setup that's completely silent. Ever heard of a Herbie, or Beananimal overflow setup? You can run thousands of gallons of water per hour without so much as hearing a trickle. Don't believe me? Watch my videos:

Herbie (sound is amplified on this one a lot, you can even hear my breathing)

Yeah with just a little work, you can have all the perks of the sump without the raging waterfall... you won't regret it!

Howdy,

You will love the classic Eheim. I run a 2213 on my 15 gal tank. Good choice. What size is your tank?

I have a FX5 and a sump and I can't hear my sump over the FX5. The FX5 isn't even loud. I guess it just depends on how you set it up.

I'm with jcardona on this one. My 300g setup using the herbie method is quieter than a 20l w an AC HOB on it. The setup is sooo simple and quiet as a mouse

My overflows were a lot louder than I liked as well. My tank is a 210G Aqueon tank with dual overflows. I did a sort of modified Herbie by running one overflow as a restricted syphon and the other as a Durso standpipe. I raised the Durso (Aqueon brand "Megaflow" standpipe) to its maximum height so that most (about 80%) of the water flows through the Herbie side. It greatly reduced the noise - if the room is dead quiet you can hear the water, but otherwise you can't hear it at all.

As far as canisters, I like the Eheim Classic Series (I own three 2217s, a 2017, and a 2213) a lot, but I would never consider t as a replacement for a sump in a heavily loaded tank.
