CA/SA Cihlid N00b

Ok, so use sand for subtrate. I have a big pile of assorted small river rock that I could maybe mix with the sand for a bit of variety. I'll be careful with the ph with the sandstone, and I'll see about getting a nice piece of large driftwood.

I'm thinking probably surprise box to have a bunch of cool colorful fish that will be slightly overstocked to avoid aggression; I think the original stock level will be a dozen small CAs.

Any other recommendations?

If you are getting a suprise box of cichlids, I would not get plants. There are a lot of SA/CA cichlids that will tear apart your plants very quickly. Other than that, your plans sound good :)

Sounds okay.

What ever seems to appeal to you, go with it. I personally wouldn't do two large rock piles but have maybe 10 or so of those river rocks spread about the aquarium, but hey, what ever floats your boat.

I agree, no need for plants. Most cichlids will dig them up anyway if they don't eat them.

I keep some plants in my tank... don't know the name of them though sorry...

Just make sure you have plants that you can keep tied down, also that aren't too delicate.

Yeah, that's about it.

You don't need plants if you don't want. If you wanted to you could use Java Fern attached to the driftwood. It's tough and has a very bitter taste that fish shy away from. Just make sure you fast it down with some fishing line.
