CA/SA Stocking ideas for a 190...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
RTM female, grammodes, cuban, female festae, carpintes

the actual 'floor' area i.e. length x width isn't that huge... and cichlids tend to be more bottom dwellers. so meaning that you probably can't keep as many as you might want.
easiest approach is to get like all 2-3" juveniles and let them grow up together. note that grammodes grow really slow, so need to factor that in as well somewhat.

if not the jag, female RT,jd,gt, texas and others i'd go for
cuban, jag, female terror, green texas and a grammode, maybe/insted a jd and gt if they'd fit in with the brusers

Ok, so I bought a JD yesterday. He's in the 55 for now until the 190 is ready in a couple of months. He's about 4 1/2" and apparantly was very hungry (a tetra is missing).

Here's a quick shot with flash...

I've been doing some research and have come up with a mostly complete preliminary stocking list.

1. Cichlasoma octofasciatum- Jack Dempsey (got a male yesterday, see photo in post above)
2. Parachromis motaguensis- Red Tiger Mota (female)
3. Cichlasoma managuense- Jaguar Cichlid (male)
4. Aequidens rivulatus- Green Terror (male)
5. Amphilophus festae- Festae, Red Terror (female)

These are what I feel are the most beautiful of the American cichlids. Please let me know what you guys (and gals) think of this list. Do you see any problems with any of the choices being together?

I would also like to add a catfish of some type. Can anyone offer any suggestions for an interesting catfish to go with the above list? Photos and links to a profile would be even better.:) I kind of like the Tiger Shovelnose and can get one locally pretty cheap. Is that a good match with the above choices (I don't know a lot about cats)?

Including the above list and the catfish (still unknown), is that too many fish, or not enough, or just right? If I could add another (or two), suggest a big colorful cichlid not already suggested.

Thanks again for the help and thanks for the best fish forums on the interweb.:D

wow nice JD, iam not 100% sure but i thought you carnt keep mota's and jags in te same tank as they look simular......i may be wrong tho. i thought it was like you carnt keep blue acara with green terrors

TSN will probably get too big (well, definitely too big heh). Could try a lima shovelnose, not as big as the TSN and a very cool fish. If you like polypterus at all I'd add a poly...and I would look into something that will spend more time near the surface (it's a tallish tank and the cichlids like to hang out around the structure near the bottom). I personally love red tailed chalceus as a surface fish, but they can be tough to find.

Nice JD by the way :)

just make sure you don't get fish pairing up. there's a chance that they might take a liking for one another.
my female red tiger mota and male jaguar were starting to get friendly as in not beating the crap outta each other and were lingering around one another and teaming up against a larger loiselli.
soooooooooo just keep that in mind.

I like Raphael Stripe Cats

Thanks guys. Any more suggestions for a catfish?

Thanks again.:)

I made another pickup today, Aequidens rivulatus, or Green Terror for those of you who don't habla. lol. This one is about 3 1/2" and has a huge appetite. He and the JD seem to be getting along well enough so far. As long as the GT doesn't venture into JD's "house".

So much for the easy to find ones (at least around here anyway). I'm still looking for Parachromis motaguensis (Red Tiger Mota), Cichlasoma managuense (Jaguar Cichlid), Amphilophus festae (Festae or Red Terror), and maybe another large, colorful cichlid and some kind of catfish.

These are in my 55 for now until I get the 190 ready. I still have to build a stand and put the tank back together (I took it apart to do a complete reseal). It should be up and running in a month or two.

I'm still looking for suggestions on another big, colorful cichlid and a decent catfish that interests me for this tank. So far, I'm partial to the Tiger Shovelnose, but I'm afraid these will get too large. Help me out, none of the other cats suggested earlier really appeal to me.

Thanks again for the help and compliments on the JD. And thanks again for this great forum.:)
