Anyone have any idea were to start. I got my 75g up and running not planning to breed these guys so i just have water out of the tap which means it is high ph and i believe hard water so that will be hard to change. But do you guys have any tips or knoledge about breeding these? Do i need to restart the tank and start using water softner?

BTW it is Typhlonectes natans i think. I am gonna post a ID thread later of it so i know for sure.

Wait, you say you're NOT planning on breeding them, but you're asking for info on how to breed them? I'm confused...

lol, it sound like that. What i was trying to say is when i set up the tank breeding these guys was not my goal. So i did not plan the water quality that might have been perfect for breeding them. But now i want to breed them and i already have 1 i just need to find more. So now thats cleared up anyone have any info?

Bump....

No one can help?

After a few searches nothing comes up, I don't think they have been bred in captivity.

Thanks mei. So from reading there i have come to the conclusion that them being regularly captive breed species wont happen like i hoped as they are going to be hard as they are long lived making them take longer to mature but i still want to do it. My next question is lowering ph. My areas ph is in the high 7s to low 8s. So how do i get this lower? Any ideas?

Since i did not plan for this i dont think my tank is good for this. Do you guys think i can do it in high ph? Because since i am in uncharted territory i think it would be best to start over. I will set up bins so i can try to breed these suckers. Custom tanks here i come. :)

Also any links on what the parameters of the amazon is? (ph and such)

t. natans are illegal to import or keep in the united states. however, i do still see them at pet shops now and then.

i wouldn't be telling the world that you have them unless you want fish and game knocking on your door with a warrant.

please don't think that i'm scolding you or something, i'm just trying to let you know what's what. :)

when i had them, they always tried to climb out of their tank, so keep a super tight lid. i wonder if they would benefit from having a portion of land with soil to burrow in, or if they were just trying to find a better water hole?

good luck with your pets, i love these little guys!

Ive never heard that t.natans was illegal in the US and cant find anything on it, any proof? I have a tight lid and when i do this i am gonna build a custom tank with a substrate incline. That way when i drain the water it will be more like a puddle from the dry season of the amazon. I just need substrate ideas.

it's something about the countries that they are native to have never allowed them to be exported and that the USA honors their laws. i've been told by a few herp dealers that they can't get them because they're illegal, but they do get smuggled in with shipments of fish a lot.

to be perfectly honest; i never actually saw any US government literature that shows they're illegal, but i never looked either. :D

here's a link to a discussion about it. http://www.caudata.org/forum/f53-ot...a-caecilians/38281-legality-typhlonectes.html
