they used to be cheap because no one could keep them alive since they could not get a hold of enough snails to feed them and they are being massed produced right now down in peru. I know that several large importers got a ton of them in so I really think that the price will stay low and continue getting lower now that they are in the country.

Thats one of the biggest misconceptions about these things.......They DON'T need Snails.........The Adults that used to be Imported never did well because they didn't know any other food source but Snails......They didn't recognize what people tried to feed them, and as a result, they had about a 95% mortaility rate.........The people that are being successful with them now are treating them like Water Monitors, and feeding them as such........

Oh, and one Importer brought one shipment in.........The other Wholesalers got them from said Importer...........We may see a couple more Peruvian shipments before they send all of what they have, but the numbers wont be like the first shipment.........

AND - The CLs I referenced were from the same Farm that all the 09/10' CLs came from........Just brought in by another Importer, and sold cheap to get them moved.......They all ate the same things these guys eat, and weren't ever fed Snails........

So you're saying the problem was with the lizard not recognizing anything other than snails as food, or the keepers not recognizing that they could give foods other than snails?

The lizards didnt recognize anything else but snails as food, now with the event of cb ones they apear to acept a more varied diet. This is comon with many specialist feeder reptiles, once someone has figured out how to bred them, the cb ofspring feal safe and try a wider menu then their parents, see hognouse snakes for example, adults of most species dont acept anything but lizards and specialy toads as food but cb ofspring acept and trive on a mice diet. Back to caiman lizards if it was me I would still use some snails from time to time to make shure they got the nutrients they need.

When you bring in an Adult Animal that is a specialist feeder in the wild, they only recognize what they specialize in as food............It's a simple concept that alot of people don't understand, and they blame the animals when they fail miserably at keeping them......

Ah, so as more people breed them not only will they become less expensive to keep, they'll get easier to keep because there will be more specimens who will accept foods other than snails. That makes sense.

How big do these guys get?
Water:land wise, what kind of ratio would you give them, what are their habits when it comes to time they spend in each?
If they are predominantly snail eaters in the wild... Is this any snail species or only aquatic/only land etc?
Interesting creatures, only ever seen one in the flesh, nice to know a bit more about them.

If Im not mistaken they get to be like 4 feet long. For land water ratio I think they would be good in a 50/50. For snails they eat predominantly water snails and crayfish.
