Callamus Worms?

Another interesting article that you might be interested in reading with regards to the dosage rate suggested when treating fish for worms using Levasimole HCl.

http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/fa091

It appears that the scientific community considers 2ppm of Levasimole HCl to be an adequate dosage, which works out to 1gr per 100 gallons, not 5gr per 100 gallons as constantly reported on the internet.

The 5gr dosage rate originates from Charles Harrison, who is a chemist/ fish hobbyist, that sells (or used to sell?) Levasimole HCl, not a DVM that specializes in treating tropical fish. (such as Dr. Roy Yanong)

Dr. Yanong also suggests that the treatment duration be 24 hrs, not 3 days as currently suggested by Charles Harrison. It appears that Charles got his info from a killi hobbyist (Ken Laidlaw), that as far as I can tell has no real qualifications for treating fish for disease etc beyond the hobbyist level. Also, originally Charles/Ken recommended only treating for 24 hrs, not 3 days. (then repeating 2-3 weeks later)

Good luck.

Good info. I read that article but then read on some forums where people were saying it did not help. I ended up goin with the higher dosage to make sure it did the job. I think from now on I'll go a little higher than 2ppm but lower than 13.

That's where I saw the 13 ppm ... same guy. Thanks RD. RD.

The dose was closer to 3-4 ppm but yes it absolutely took care of that callamanas outbreak. I redosed after 3 days I think (been a long time).

BTW - I don't think your fish deaths are the result of overdosing. The dose you used wasn't high enough.

The pineconing is definitely a result of the callamanas worms ... or at least that's what happened with my fish. After passing the worms (after treatment) most of the fish that died would swell up all over ... even their face and around the eyes would become bloated.

How do you think the callamanus worms got into the tank? Have you added any new plants recently?

I haven't added any plants or fish for a couple of months. I've been suspicious of my electric blue acara for a long time but couldn't pinpoint the exact problem. She is on and off disinterested in food and just looks kind of crappy overall. She's been in the tank almost 2 years tho. I was taking her out and treating in my hospital tank with whatever meds I thought may help when she would start to look really bad. Then she would kind of perk up for a while. I didn't think to treat the whole tank until I noticed the parasites affecting her buddy, the yellow acara.
Since the barbs were the only ones suffering the compaction after treatment I'm leaning towards them being the origin. They were one of my last additions to the tank.

Just an update:

All of the fish are much more active and eating today. They ate all of their frozen food last night (I only gave one cube to gauge if they were eating) and are picking at their pellets this morning. They've never been too crazy about nls brand so I'm not very worried about that.
Since the end of the treatment, I've only seen 2 of my clown loaches at a time. They usually swim together especially at feeding time. I decided to pull out the piece of driftwood that they live in this morning and, sure enough, there are only 2 left. I haven't seen the bodies or bones in the tank so I'm assuming they were eaten and died during treatment. So all together, an overdose of meds, 2 90% water changes, and losses of 2 barbs and 2 loaches.

No need for 3 treatments. From the UFL link.

One effective bath treatment dose is 2 ppm (mg/liter) levamisole for 24 hours, with a repeat treatment in two to three weeks.

They quote the same Dr on the LOL site.
