I know there is boxing and mma threads already. But I want to start a discussion with other fighters or fans on what fighting style they believe is most complete. In my youth I boxed, muay-thai ,and Brazilian ju jitzu. But I never used just one style in a fight or training. I think mma is the most complete because of the mix of styles and skills. As a fighter I know it only takes the right technique or skill set to win or lose a fight. having the ability to use different styles and skills can be the game changer in any fight.

Great discussion Dee!

As told two of my boys are heavy on muay thay ( medals and all ) but they admit that, once grounded, they have no chance with BJJ.

So i tell them to mix, as you do. They don't.

Another thing i find odd is the lack of spirituality in these modern fighting technoques, which i find was the most important aspect in the martial arts in my time, such aa Judo and karate, or kung fu....

Everybody is going to agree with the first post that a hybrid mixing several different styles is the most effective, doesn't leave much room for discussion

This is also obvious from watching the evolution of UFC from the first tournament (had boxers, sumo wrestlers, kick boxers, Bjj, etc) to what you see today in UFC and MMA

Yeah that's why I want to mix styles

I noticed that also. My cousin or myself was always training for the next fight.

I think wrestling is very important to have a solid background in. A lot of guys fighting wrestled in college. Once youve wrestled everything else becomes easier to learn.

So are you asking about ring fighting or street fighting? I've seen some pretty good ring fighters get ripped apart in the street. It's a whole different world.

I'm talking about in a ring. I know that just like good street fighters can't cut it in the pros. Kimbo Slice for example.

I boxed when i was around 10 years old around 1980 on and off for a couple of years
In my teenage years around 1988-92 i trained in thai boxing and Ju Jitsu, i got into it for the wrong reasons as it made it easier for me when i got into fights, i did this a lot.
My later years i spent a few years dabbling in various other arts albeit for the right reasons this time but this was cut short due to some arthritis i now have. This has also led to me stopping other things i was into like lifting weights etc, i'm a bit fatter and a lot slower these days lol.

I wrestled in High School and boxed for 4 years in the Army so I've always loved a good boxer, the fluid movement of a good boxer is poetry in motion. MMA is IMO closer to what real "fighting" is about but being a hybrid of sorts it lacks the beauty and grace of any one of the mother disciplines individually. As far as the ring is concerned for me Boxing will always be the sweet science.
