that's about it's age. I had it about 3-4 months. it's about a good 10"

OK that effectively ends it being a mature fish.... Most likely this is just a temporary vent protrusion. A few causes exist for this. In most cases it will fix it's self so I would not worry about it.

That was going to be my next question....

As for this let me repeat again that Chiclets and tetras are not gar... And when looking a Female gar that is spawning it look like this....(For reference)
This may be related and this is one of the reasons age is being brought up but your analogy with ciclids is way off.. Gar do not have "Breeding tubes"...

Lol I had a feeling I might be a bit off since it was a Cichlid but oh well.

that sounds like the most likely possibility.

richard, have you or solomon ever had a gar lay eggs or try breeding in aquaria? pm me if you dont want to derail.

We are working on that....Pending maturity of some fishes. Some of my older tropicals have dry runned the actions and I have had a longnose expel eggs but these where not fertilized by any male fish. We will see in a few years when the fish are mature....

.

Ok, the protrusion is out a bit more now just a little bit. and only the tip was white, the rest of it may be poop or flesh.

so now my question is, what causes this, or what may i have done to cause it AND, how can I prevent it if possible. This guy hit a growth spurt btw.

when i first got the other one, it was a good 7-8", then i got the the baby (the one with the problem now) when it was only 4" and skinny. Well, the little guy hit a growth spurt and now is almost as big as the other guy. they are both a good 10-11" eyeballing. if you don't look closely, and because of the coloration difference, they look almost alike. the little guy more than tripled his size and the other guy just grew a few inches. they both eat about the same.

could the growth spurt have anything to do with it?

thanks guys that's good info.

one more thing also, if it's poop and there's a blockage or something, is it out of my control? And just have to wait it out?
