While working on my filter room yesterday my dear 22 month old daughter picked up my 40w Pentair UV Sterilizer and dropped it. Can I fix this with PVC glue or epoxy? What is my best option?
Is there anything on the unit that tells you what type of resin the unit is made with?
I'm no plumber by the way, but I think knowing what type of plastic the fitting is made of will determine what type of glue is required. What is the operating pressure of the unit? This will be drastically reduced once it is repaired........
UV Sterilizers are placed on the downstream end of a filtration system and discharges to the tank. I don't forsee there being any pressure to speak of at the break especially being on the discharge end of the unit.
Looks like it is PVC.
I would look for medium or heavy body glue (thicker).
Smear coat the break on both pieces and then use some masking tape to hold it in position while it cures.
After it is dry you could cut a couple of small pieces from a piece of appropriately-sized PVC pipe and glue them across the break as reinforcements (be sure to rough up the glossy inside of the pipe pieces).
You should be able to find it at any hardware store, "hot blue" (for wet conditions) would work well, too. Really, any PVC glue should work. Since it is a relatively small contact area, you might want to prep it with some PVC primer and a Q-Tip. I think you'll be fine, but it is your house that would flood, so...
A small chunk of PVC pipe glued on the inside would increase strength, but only if it fit tight (I don't think it would, but you could fiddle around a bit).
