It sounds like you are playing both sides of the fence here. You dont believe in God because you dont think any one has ever seen Him, but your also saying that people are being stubborn because they wont believe that there could be something bigger and smarter than themselves.

Oh, and I dont want to be the derail-er but be careful to just accept the notion that there is no evidence for God, or that a belief in God is factless. This is simply not true. You did say the "majority" of religions, so I wont put words in your mouth as to which specific one(s) you are speaking of though, because there certainly are a bunch of them. :D

I can see why you would think that I am contradicting myself. However, I am talking about two aspects of the term "superior being". One, I am refering to an actual living, breathing life form. The other is a "spirit" (for lack of a better term). I think the term God is inserted whenever an unexplainable question is asked(like most of the questions in this thread). It is a way to give people a positive feeling about their existence. People seem to need that security. This is why people turn to organized religion. It has all the answers. This type of self brainwashing is why I say that people would have a hard time knowing that they wern't on top of the universe.

This is all not to mention all the different religions that there are. A lot of them contradict each other. Who is to say which one (if any) is really right? If one is right, what is going to happen to all the people outside that religion? Are they all going to burn in the hell of someone else's religion?

obviously this guy thinks about the same way as i do.

imo religion was started for a couple of reasons: to explain the unexplainable and to control the masses (sort of a form of government). which even if there isn't a god, religion has made a lot of people have better lives, and kept people from doing bad things....and isn't that enough to justify it?

anyway back to the subject in hand.

wats so important about these super hot planets? i mean sure its a new discovery but its not like we are going to gain any benefit from them...

I'll quote both of you so I only have to write one response :D. I only have one thing for you guys to think about and ironically its actually the same argument that I used for the "vastness" of the universe thing. Don't fall into the trap that because there are lots of religions that, that means that none of them can be right, or that one of them can be right for that matter. The possibility of this being true doesnt rest on the number of false religions lying in the untrue waste around it. And while sometimes religions can offer quick fixes for what ever is emotionally ailing a person at that time, this is not what draws all (or even most I would argue) to a certain religion, there are plenty of people who have taken an educated look at evidence, and drawn the conclusion that a certain belief system is true.

Also I whole-heartedly agree with your statement as to the importance (or lack there of:D) of these discoveries. I guess we could say that this may help us to understand our universe better, but odds are, it doesnt. To me the importance of these findings is just to sit back and marvel at what is around us, and the pure majesty of it. :)
