man thats prettty cool...ill probably do that now for the fifty five i recently found on the streets of my neighborhood...
 
The only problem I see is that all the waste has to go through the pump before encountering any filter media which could lead to clogging of the pum.

I don't use a standard aquarium or pond pump in a setup like this. I use a farm-type solids waste pump. These pumps can pass large pieces of 'waste' without clogging. You can even find them with built-in impeller blade back washers that constantly flush the impeller chamber with a smaller volume cross-current to keep the impeller blades free of clogs.
 
Use the nylon stockings that are talked about in another thread as a prefilter.;)

I like the idea of the plastic scrubbers. I'll use it to upgrade the planter filter to my above ground pond in the patio as shown below, where I use a 4 inch cube as a prefilter to the pond mag-drive and the pvc outlet into the planter is now inside a 200 micron filter bag:
