I don't use a standard aquarium or pond pump in a setup like this. I use a farm-type solids waste pump. These pumps can pass large pieces of 'waste' without clogging. You can even find them with built-in impeller blade back washers that constantly flush the impeller chamber with a smaller volume cross-current to keep the impeller blades free of clogs.

A simple slip on foam pre-filter solves that pretty quick. A quick rinse when you do your weekly PWC and your back in business.

I have been working on a simular filter system for my 150 utilizing bioballs filter foam floss and 50 micron felt...pix comming soon.
does anybody else think that tank looks a bit murky?

Use the nylon stockings that are talked about in another thread as a prefilter.

I use this design on my stock bins but, I have the bucket sitting on a polyethylene table inside the bin. Except for the table legs, there's no loss of room and with the filter system inside the bin, there's no leaks outside the bin.

I like the idea of the plastic scrubbers. I'll use it to upgrade the planter filter to my above ground pond in the patio as shown below, where I use a 4 inch cube as a prefilter to the pond mag-drive and the pvc outlet into the planter is now inside a 200 micron filter bag:
