Camera records feral cats attacking endangered Hawaiian birds

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So,what would you propose, that we do nothing about the cats and just leave them to wipe out those other animals?

Yeah well no one not once mentioned the stupidity of human kind that brought this type of problem to light. All i read was kill feral cats this and that. Sure it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that but what does it take for people to really understand the root of the problem? Maybe you can do it K krichardson ;D

LOL,perhaps no one felt the need to state the obvious.Look, you can play the blame game all you want but still, that does not immediately address the current problem of cats running roughshod on an island.

I did not take part of the studies associated with this problem in Hawaii so I can't really provide any insight to any solutions but since the study was able to identify that feral cats are partial responsible.. great but what are their proposed next steps? Killing the feral cats wouldn't solve the issue that's for sure. what happened when the great bald eagles were getting limited in their total population count?

Why wouldn't killing the cats solve the issue?

.....or,as some would prefer.....removing them all? I wouldn't be opposed to that either just as long as they are removed from the equation.Killing or removing them certainly will not matter once they have dropped the numbers of other aninals low enough.

I would say wouldn't it be better to control the population of the birds then? Trying to weed out the cats won't work though imo...

less opportunities to catch birds = less food = reduce cat population?

I don't agree with making the native population suffer any more than what the cats have already done to them.....just get rid of the ferals lol.

I just got back from Hawaii (Oahu) this week. I can say wild life including the homeless have increased exponentially.
There are wild chicken everywhere in the city. Wild pigs are in people's backyards eating the homeowner's plants. People are feeding these animals.....at Sandy Beach I saw a pan of water and cat food in the bushes next to the parking lot. In the evening, flocks of ringneck parrots are in the sky. Last week a homeowner caught a bearded dragon in his yard. People are warned of the spread of the Coqui frog from the neighboring island. Island plants seem to be the problem for frogs and ratlung worm disease. The other day a 19 year old was charged for killing several albatross at Keana Point. Lots of problems in Paradise.....not to mention the pain getting through Aqriculture screening at the airport. Very hot topic at the moment.

.... another reason to take a step back and really think about what are we "humans" doing to augment these issues is where we should start. Killing feral cats is no solution.
